← Back to How do you apply resin on tiles?

Thinking of rejuvenating tiles with an epoxy resin finish? It’s tempting to dive straight in, but some extra groundwork ensures your results last and deliver a professional look.
Should You Apply Resin Directly to Tiles?
Applying resin directly on tile surfaces may seem straightforward, but skipping the priming stage can result in poor adhesion and possible peeling down the line. Tiles, especially ceramic ones, are typically smooth and non-porous, making it difficult for resin to bond securely on its own. For a lasting finish, it’s best to prepare the tiles with an appropriate primer designed for resin work.
For example, Epoxyprimer is purpose-made for this role and helps lock the resin to the tile, resisting delamination and wear.
How to Prepare Tiles for Resin Application
- Clean thoroughly: Remove dust, oils, and soap residues with a suitable cleaner. The tile surface must be dry and free from debris.
- Apply a dedicated primer: Use a water-based, odourless two-component epoxy primer like Epoxyprimer. This creates a receptive base for your resin, ensuring reliable adhesion even on glossy ceramics.
- Allow the primer to fully cure: Wait as directed—usually 24 to 48 hours—before proceeding to resin application for best results.
Choosing the Right Resin for Tiled Surfaces
Once primed, you can apply your chosen epoxy resin. Products such as “Icrystal” or “Art Pro” are suitable for surface coatings and decorative finishes on tiles. Always consider the layer thickness; for standard coatings, opt for resins designed for 1–1.5cm layers or less per pour. Ensure the space is well-ventilated and always follow safety guidelines when mixing and pouring.
When is Priming Especially Important?
Priming is crucial when working in areas subject to moisture, temperature changes, or frequent traffic—such as bathroom floors, kitchen splashbacks, and feature walls. This step gives your resin the best chance of looking great and lasting, even under daily use.
