Finishing your home-built surfboard with a flawless, glossy shine isn’t just for show—it’s the final touch that protects and brings out the best in your craftsmanship. A mirror-like finish takes some patience and the right process, but it’s definitely achievable for dedicated DIYers.
Sanding for Smoothness
Before you begin the glossing process, it’s crucial to achieve a super-smooth surface. Start by sanding the cured resin layer, ideally with increasingly fine grits—work up to 400 or even 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper for an even, matte result. Take care to remove all dust and wipe down before proceeding. This step ensures your final coat sits perfectly flat and clear.
Applying the Final Gloss Coat
A well-layered final coat is key to that glassy look. Use a high-quality epoxy resin designed for composite surfboard finishes, such as the “Carbon Resin” Epoxy Resin for Carbon Fiber & Fiberglass Coating. Mix and apply as recommended, using a clean, soft brush or squeegee for best results. Allow it to self-level, ensuring your workspace is as dust-free as possible throughout curing. Most resins will fully cure at room temperature—avoid touching or moving the board until it’s solid and shiny.
Polishing and Maintenance
Once the final resin coat is cured, further polishing can enhance the shine. Use a fine rubbing compound and a soft cloth for a high-gloss effect. Clean the board thoroughly before storage, and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight off the water to keep the gloss looking fresh.
