Calculating the right amount of resin is key to achieving a flawless table coating without overspending or running short. Let’s look at a simple method to determine exactly how much resin your project will require.
The Basic Resin Calculation Formula
To estimate the volume of resin needed, measure your table top’s length and width in centimetres, and decide on your intended coating thickness (also in centimetres). Multiply these three values together to get the total volume in cubic centimetres. For example, a table 120 cm long, 60 cm wide, with a planned 0.5 cm coating, gives:
- 120 cm × 60 cm × 0.5 cm = 3,600 cm³
To convert this to litres, simply divide the result by 1,000 (since 1,000 cm³ = 1 litre). So, 3,600 cm³ becomes 3.6 litres of resin.
Choosing the Right Resin for Your Thickness
Your resin choice should correspond with the intended layer thickness. For table coatings up to 2 cm, a clear option like “Trasparente” epoxy resin offers a glass-like finish and is ideal for thinner layers. If you plan a thicker pour, consider a specialised deep casting resin such as EpoxyTable 5-Five, which allows safe casting in layers up to 5 cm.
Always check the recommended maximum thickness per layer for your resin, as exceeding it may cause curing issues or overheating.
