← Back to How do you polish epoxy resin?

Polishing epoxy resin can create a sparkling, glass-like finish on your projects—but getting it right begins with good timing. Knowing when to start sanding or polishing makes all the difference to the quality and durability of your result.
How Long to Wait Before Polishing Epoxy
It’s essential to allow your epoxy resin to cure fully before you begin any sanding, buffing, or polishing. As a general rule, wait at least 7 days after pouring your final resin layer. This gives the surface enough time to set completely and reach optimum hardness. Touching or sanding the resin earlier may cause surface blemishes or marks, as the resin may still be slightly soft under the surface, even if it feels dry to the touch.
Why Full Curing Matters
Epoxy continues to harden for several days after it feels firm. Attempting to sand or polish uncured resin can disrupt the finish, lead to clogging on abrasive pads, or cause unwanted scratches and dull spots. Ensuring that the resin is thoroughly hardened helps your polishing tools, such as sanding pads and polishing creams, deliver a smooth, consistent result—without dragging soft material across the surface.
Getting the Best Polished Result
- Confirm your workspace is clean and dust-free before starting.
- Use progressively finer sanding grits if flatting the cured epoxy.
- After sanding, apply a polishing system—such as Epoxy Polish—with a suitable hand pad or polisher.
- Avoid using only cloths for polishing, as they may not provide the even pressure or friction needed for a brilliant shine.
When Patience Pays Off
If you’re in a hurry, it can be tempting to rush into sanding—but any extra patience here will reward you with a flawless finish that lasts. Giving your resin sufficient time to harden ensures your investment of effort and materials isn’t wasted.
