If you’re planning to create a resin and wood (river) table, calculating the right amount of epoxy resin is essential for a smooth build and a great finish. Here’s how to work out what you need, with practical tips to avoid common mistakes.

Calculating Your Resin Volume

The quantity of epoxy resin needed depends on the length, width, and depth of the area you wish to fill. For river tables, measure the length and average width of the river section, as well as the desired depth of resin pour. Multiply these measurements together to get your volume in cubic centimetres, then convert to litres (1000 cm³ = 1 litre).

Length × Width × Depth (in cm) = Volume (cm³)
Example: 120cm × 20cm × 4cm = 9,600 cm³ = 9.6 litres

For non-uniform shapes, use the average width of the ‘river’ for a good estimate. Double-check your measurements and always allow a little extra to accommodate for spills or any absorption by the wood.

Matching Resin to Your Table Thickness

Epoxy resins come with recommended maximum pour depths per application. Choose a resin that matches your project’s requirements:

For pours up to 5cm, consider products like EpoxyTable 5-Five.
For extra-thick castings (up to 10cm in a single pour), use a deep-pour resin such as Epoxytable 10-Ten.

It’s best not to exceed the recommended pour thickness, as this can affect curing or result in unwanted heat build-up.

When Accurate Measurement Matters Most

Getting your resin amount right is crucial for deep pours or when using expensive pigments. Running short mid-pour can cause visible seams, while excess resin may be wasteful. Double-check your calculations before purchasing to ensure a seamless result.
