Mixing Resin Without Introducing Air
Start by measuring your resin and hardener accurately. Mix them slowly in a clean container, taking your time to gently fold the resin—avoid vigorous whisking, which traps more air. Use a broad mixing stick and scrape the sides and base of your vessel for thorough blending. Many modern deep pour resins, such as Epoxytable 10-Ten, are formulated to help bubbles rise and escape naturally while mixing and curing.
Pouring and Mould Preparation
When pouring into your helmet mould, work slowly and in a continuous, steady stream. This helps to prevent large bubbles from forming as the resin settles. It’s a good idea to tap or gently vibrate the mould after the pour—invert or flex the mould gently if possible—to encourage trapped bubbles to rise. If any bubbles remain at the surface after pouring, you can lightly pass a heat gun or even a hairdryer set to low above the resin to coax bubbles out—do not overheat as this may affect the finish. Choose resins with longer working times for deep or detailed helmet sections, as this allows air to escape before the mixture thickens. Always consult the manufacturer’s guidance for recommended casting thickness and working time for best results, especially when working with high-thickness projects.
