Respecting the manufacturer’s recommended maximum pour depth is essential for a successful and safe epoxy resin project. Pouring too deep in one application risks ruining your work and can create safety issues.
Understanding Pour Depth Limits
Each epoxy resin is formulated with a maximum thickness you can pour in a single layer. Exceeding this can lead to uncontrollable heat buildup (known as exotherm), resulting in cracking, yellowing, or even smoke and deformation of your piece. As a rule of thumb, standard clear casting epoxies such as Trasparente are suitable up to 2cm per pour, while specialised deep pour resins like EpoxyTable 5-Five can manage up to 5cm, and products designed for super-deep castings (like Epoxytable 10-Ten) can handle up to 10cm per pour.
Safe Layering Techniques
If your project needs a thicker finish than the resin’s recommended limit, simply pour in multiple layers. Allow each layer to cure before adding the next—typically waiting several hours (check your resin’s instructions for the ideal interval). Stacked pours allow the project to cure safely, reduce the risk of bubbles, and yield a stronger, flawless result.

- Ensure your workspace is level and temperature stable for best results.
When This Matters Most
Larger projects like river tables, thick art castings, and encapsulations are most at risk if maximum pour depths aren’t respected. Following these guidelines is particularly important when working in warm conditions or with large volumes of resin, where heat can quickly become unmanageable.
