Choosing the Right Surface Preparation

If you’ve used a high-gloss release film such as Shiny Shield, you’ll find that your resin shelf already boasts an exceptionally smooth and reflective surface. In many cases, only a minimal polish is needed. For shelves cast without such films and showing slight texture or dullness, further finishing is essential.

Sanding for a Crystal-Clear Finish

Start by carefully sanding any imperfections. Use wet/dry sandpaper, beginning with a fine grit (e.g., 800 or 1000) and progressing to ultra-fine grits (up to 2000 or 3000). Keep the surface and paper wet to prevent scratches and to lift debris. Wipe down between grits for best results and ensure a completely smooth base before polishing.

Buffing and Final Polishing

Once sanded, apply a gentle plastic or resin polishing compound with a clean soft cloth or a rotary buffer (at slow speed). Work in small, circular motions. Continue buffing until you reach the clarity and shine you desire. Take care not to overheat the resin during this process.
