Ways to Avoid Bubbles in Embedded Insects

One of the main challenges when embedding insects in resin is keeping your finished piece perfectly clear and bubble-free. Careful preparation and the right techniques can make all the difference in the final result.

Choosing Resin and Mixing Carefully

Your choice of resin impacts the clarity and ease of embedding. Use a multipurpose clear epoxy such as the “Trasparente” resin or an odourless formula like “Icrystal” for best results. Always mix resin and hardener slowly and thoroughly, scraping the sides and bottom of your mixing container. Fast or aggressive mixing can introduce excess air, leading to unwanted bubbles.

Layering Technique and Insect Placement

Poor layering or rushing the process are common reasons bubbles get trapped around embedded objects. Pour your resin in thin layers, allowing each one to cure fully before adding the next, which helps any air escape naturally. Place the insect gently into the half-set resin layer, using a stick or tweezers to carefully position it and ensure there are no air pockets trapped against the body or under wings or legs.

Practical Steps for Reducing Bubbles

  • Warm the resin container slightly (without using direct heat) to lower its viscosity before mixing, which helps bubbles rise and pop more easily.
  • Let freshly mixed resin sit for a minute before pouring to allow air to escape.
  • If bubbles rise after pouring, gently pop them with a toothpick or by lightly blowing across the surface (avoid heat tools if not recommended by your resin’s instructions).

When Bubble Prevention Matters Most

Bubble prevention is especially crucial when making display specimens, jewellery, or art pieces where detail and clarity are the focus. For deep castings over 2cm, opt for a deep-pour resin like “EpoxyTable 5-Five” to further reduce the risk of air entrapment and to manage the heat produced during curing.
