Removing your resin creation from its mould—also known as demoulding—is a key moment in every project. Getting it right helps maintain both your finished art and your moulds in perfect condition.
When to Demould
The most important factor in successful demoulding is patience. Always wait until your resin is fully cured and hardened before attempting to remove it. This could range from several hours to a full day or more, depending on the type of resin and environmental conditions. Prematurely removing the piece can lead to warping or damage.
Step-by-Step Demoulding Tips
- Check the edges: Gently press the edges of the mould to feel whether the resin is firm and not tacky.
- Flex the mould: Carefully flex the silicone mould from the sides to loosen the resin piece. Work your way around, avoiding pulling forcefully on thin or delicate sections.
- Support the shape: If possible, use your fingers to coax the art out from underneath without using sharp tools that may scratch the resin or the mould itself.
For larger or complex shapes, flexing the mould in several directions helps release air and eases removal.
Caring for Your Moulds
Resin moulds are reusable and last longer with gentle handling. Never use metal tools to pry out your artwork, as this can tear the silicone or leave marks. If you’re working with detailed or fragile designs, a light mist of mould release spray before pouring resin can make demoulding simpler. When This Matters
Gentle demoulding is especially important when working on intricate projects like trays, coasters, or Christmas ornaments. It helps preserve fine details and prevents accidental tearing or distortion, ensuring your creations come out beautifully every time.
