Sand Thoroughly Between Resin Layers for Optimal Bonding

Sanding diligently between pours is an essential step when working with wood and resin boards. This ensures your layered resin projects remain durable, well-bonded and visually seamless from top to bottom.

Why Sand Between Resin Layers?

Fresh resin bonds best to a slightly textured surface. When a cured resin layer is left unsanded, its glossy finish can actually prevent the next pour from adhering properly. Carefully sanding breaks the surface glaze, creating tiny scratches that encourage mechanical grip between layers. This is especially important for thick pours or when working in stages, as you’re likely to do with a deep pour product such as EpoxyTable 5-Five.

How to Sand Between Resin Pours

  • Wait for the previous resin layer to cure as per product instructions.
  • Use fine sandpaper (typically 240–400 grit) to scuff the entire surface gently and evenly.
  • Remove any sanding dust thoroughly—ideally with a vacuum and a tack cloth—to keep contaminants out of the next layer.

If you’re using a kit like the River-Table Complete Kit, follow the included instructions for sanding and cleaning between steps for the best overall finish.

When This Matters Most

Sanding between layers is especially crucial for large or deep resin projects, or when you’re delayed between pours. It also helps if adding decorative elements or pigments between stages, as sanding prevents delamination and visible seam lines in the finished board.
