Porous and organic items have small openings that absorb moisture and air. When resin is poured over them untreated, this can lead to bubbling, cloudiness, or even stains and colour changes. By pre-sealing with an appropriate medium, you create a protective barrier that locks out air and moisture, leading to clearer, more predictable results.
How to Seal Natural or Porous Inclusions
- Clean and Dry: Ensure items are thoroughly dry and free from dust or oils before sealing.
- Choose a Suitable Medium: Use a clear-drying sealer such as a water-based varnish, PVA glue, or a dedicated craft sealant. For delicate botanicals or paper, a thin spray sealant can work well.
- Apply Thin Layers: Apply a gentle, even coat and allow it to dry fully. More absorbent items may need two or three coats to ensure complete coverage.
Once sealed, you can safely embed your chosen objects in clear casting resin like “Trasparente” epoxy resin for a stunning, bubble-free effect.
Practical Tips for Embedding
- Use Tweezers: Carefully position your sealed objects in the mould to avoid fingerprints and shifting.
- Pour in Layers: For thicker pours, add resin gradually, allowing each layer to partially set. This helps keep inclusions in place and reduces the risk of bubbles.
- Allow Thorough Curing: Ensure each stage is fully set before moving on, especially when pouring up to 2cm deep with products such as “Trasparente” resin.
