How to Test for Leaks Before Pouring Any Resin

Before you pour any resin for your wood and resin table, it’s vital to make sure your mould is perfectly sealed. Any unnoticed gaps or seams can result in leaks and wasted materials. Here’s how to check for leaks and set yourself up for a smooth, successful resin project.

Why Leak Testing Is Essential

Resin is self-levelling and will quickly find its way through the tiniest cracks. Leaks in your mould can cause sticky messes, uneven pouring, or even result in your project being ruined. Taking the time to test for leaks gives you peace of mind and helps avoid unnecessary waste or damage to your workspace.

Simple Steps to Check Your Mould

  • Seal all joints: Use a reliable silicone paste or sealant on every seam and along the base. Particular attention should be given to corners and the area where the base meets the sides.
  • Water test: Pour a small amount of water into the mould and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. If there’s no sign of moisture escaping underneath or through joints, your mould is ready for resin. Dry completely before proceeding.
  • Visual check: Look for daylight or gaps along every join. Reseal any suspect areas before starting your resin pour.

The “River-Table” – Complete Kit for Creating Your First Epoxy Resin Table includes a special silicone paste specifically designed for sealing your formwork, helping to ensure a leak-free experience even for beginners.

When Thorough Leak Testing Matters Most

If you’re planning a deep pour (above 2cm in a single layer) with premium epoxies like EpoxyTable 5-Five or using a custom-sized mould for a table, an unnoticed leak can cause significant resin loss and project delays. Testing is particularly important for complex mould shapes or when using MDF bases.
