Gathering Your Measurements

Use a ruler, tape measure, or digital calipers to check the depth of your project mould or the recess you plan to fill with resin. Take measurements at several different spots, especially if your mould or project base isn’t perfectly level. Recording these values helps determine areas where resin may settle deeper, reducing surprises during your pour.

• Always measure in millimetres or centimetres for precision.
• Jot down readings from each location for reference.
• For tables, check both the centre and near the edges.

Calculating an Accurate Average Thickness

Add up all your recorded thickness measurements and divide by the number of readings to find the average thickness. This approach gives an overall figure that helps avoid either running out of resin or having surplus left over. For applications like river tables, you’ll typically find an average thickness of resin to be less than the deepest part of the void, since wood or substrate may rise unevenly.

Match to Your Resin’s Pour Limits

Before you finalise your calculation, always check the recommended maximum pour thickness for your specific resin. Some casting resins are suitable for layers up to 2cm, while specialist deep pour resins may allow up to 5cm per application. Exceeding the maximum can lead to issues with curing or overheating. Consult your kit’s guidelines before starting the project.
