Ensuring your epoxy resin does not bond permanently to your mould or formwork is essential when creating a resin coffee table. Using a release agent or tape makes it much easier to demould your project and finish it to a high standard.

Why Prevent Resin from Sticking?

Resin binds strongly to a wide range of materials, including wood, plastic, and metal. Without a proper barrier, you could find your cured resin irreversibly attached to the formwork or mould. This often results in damaged surfaces and unnecessary sanding or chiselling. Applying a release method ensures you can remove your piece easily and preserve both the table and the mould.

Choosing Between Release Agent and Tape

The two most popular options to prevent sticking are specialised release films and tapes, or a release agent like silicone paste. Special release tapes are simple to apply and provide a consistent, non-stick layer that peels away cleanly. Silicone-based pastes are brushed or spread over the surface, forming a slick barrier during the pour.

• Release tape: Ideal for flat surfaces and interior walls of formwork. Easily removable, leaves minimal residue.
• Silicone paste: Useful for sealing corners or complex shapes where tape may not adhere smoothly.

Practical Steps for Smooth Demoulding

• Ensure all contact surfaces are clean and dry before application.
• Apply tape or brush on the release agent to every area that will contact resin, including seams and corners.
• Press tape down firmly to avoid gaps, or ensure even coverage if using paste.
• After the resin has cured fully, gently dismantle the formwork and peel away your release film or tape. For stubborn areas, flex the formwork rather than force the resin out.

When This Matters Most

Using release tape or agent is especially crucial for beginners, those using expensive moulds, or when working with deep pours that will place pressure on the formwork. It simplifies the demoulding process, reduces surface defects, and saves considerable time during finishing.
