Prepare Your Substrate for a Permeable Walkway

When installing a permeable walkway, the longevity and performance of your surface depend heavily on how well you prepare the substrate. Laying the right groundwork ensures effective drainage, prevents uneven settling, and creates a solid foundation for your chosen stone and resin system.

Why Substrate Preparation Is Essential

Proper substrate preparation ensures water can pass through your walkway, avoiding puddles and promoting durability. For permeable installations, a free-draining base enables rainwater to filter into the subsoil, helping reduce surface runoff and the risk of flooding. Neglecting this step can cause surface movement, poor drainage, and premature wear on your new walkway.

Steps to Prepare Your Substrate

  • Excavate: Remove existing surface materials to reach stable ground, typically excavating 150–200mm deep for pedestrian areas.
  • Add Sub-base: Lay a layer of open-graded aggregate (such as MOT Type 3 or clean gravel) to facilitate drainage and stability. Compact in layers for an even base.
  • Install Edge Restraints: Set edging stones or metal restraints to maintain shape and contain the resin-bound surface.
  • Optional Geotextile: For added stability and to prevent weed growth, you may add a permeable membrane between the soil and sub-base.

Once your base is stable and level, you’re ready to apply your resin and aggregate mix, such as that found in the Flowstone Complete Permeable Floor Kit.

When This Matters Most

Substrate preparation is particularly important in areas prone to heavy rainfall or frost, as well as high traffic locations like driveways and footpaths. A well-prepared base keeps your permeable walkway looking elegant and functioning efficiently for years to come.
