Steps for Creating Silicone Moulds

Creating your own silicone moulds opens up endless opportunities for detailed casting, whether you’re designing jewellery, craft items, or making industrial components. The process is straightforward with a little knowledge and the right materials.

Preparing the Object and Formwork

Begin by selecting the item you wish to replicate. Secure your object firmly within a form or box, ensuring it’s clean and free from dust or debris. The container you use should be slightly larger than the object, leaving enough space around it for the silicone to form a robust mould wall. If your item has intricate features or undercuts, you may wish to apply a light release agent for easier removal.

Mixing and Pouring the Silicone

Using a suitable silicone rubber such as “Liquid Mould” – Casting Liquid Silicone Rubber, mix the base and activator carefully according to manufacturer’s instructions—typically a 1:1 ratio. Stir slowly to avoid introducing air bubbles. Pour the silicone gently over the object, starting from one corner to allow the mixture to flow evenly and minimise trapped air. For professional results and very fine detail, consider using gentle taps or a light pressure chamber to encourage air bubbles to rise and escape.

Curing and Demoulding

Allow the silicone to cure as recommended by your chosen product—some silicones are ready in a few hours, while others may take longer. Avoid disturbing the set-up during this period. Once fully cured, carefully remove the mould from the formwork and extract your original item. Clean the new mould as instructed, and it’s ready for use with resin, plaster, wax, or other compatible casting materials.

When This Matters

Understanding the basic steps is essential if you’re looking to achieve professional results in home crafts, jewellery making, model replicas, or prototyping. The right technique ensures your mould is detailed, long-lasting and reusable.
