Bubbles are a common challenge when working with resin moulds, but with a few straightforward techniques, you can achieve beautifully clear and smooth castings. Preventing trapped air will ensure your resin projects have a professional finish.
Mixing and Pouring: Keep It Gentle
The process begins with careful resin preparation. Always mix your resin and hardener slowly, avoiding vigorous stirring that could introduce excess air. Once fully blended, pour your mixture steadily from one edge of the mould so the resin gently flows in and fills from the bottom up. This technique encourages air to escape ahead of the resin rather than becoming trapped inside.
Release Trapped Bubbles from the Mould
After pouring, there are simple steps to coax remaining bubbles out. Gently tap or wobble the mould on the work surface—this helps small air pockets float up and pop before the resin sets. If your mould is flexible, squeezing or flexing the edges lightly can also encourage bubbles near the surface to escape. For intricate castings, a quick pass with a heat gun or even blowing gently through a straw over the surface can help, as warmth thins the resin and bubbles rise faster. Just take care not to overheat or disturb the resin’s surface.
Choosing the Right Mould Material
