Step-by-Step: Mixing Silicone Correctly
Measure out your silicone base and catalyst according to the specific product’s ratio, most commonly a straightforward 1:1 by weight. Pour both parts into a clean container, and stir gently yet thoroughly for a couple of minutes, ensuring the mix is uniform with no streaks. Mixing slowly helps minimise trapped air, which can create unwanted bubbles in your finished mould.
- Always use clean, dry tools.
- Scrape sides and bottom of your mixing container while stirring.
- Consider using two containers: transfer the mix after the initial stir to a fresh one, and stir again for guaranteed evenness.
Pouring Techniques for Bubble-Free Moulds
Slow, controlled pouring is key to preserving fine details and preventing trapped air. Begin by pouring the mixed silicone into one corner of your mould box, letting it flow over and around the model rather than pouring directly onto it. This approach helps air escape naturally. For projects where clarity and precision are critical, you may wish to agitate your mould box gently or use a vacuum chamber to further reduce bubbles.
