← Back to how to create a resin coating

When creating resin-coated items that may come into contact with food, it’s essential to consider safety and certification. Not every resin is suitable for such use, so always check before you begin your project.
Understanding Food Safety and Resin Coatings
Not all epoxy or polyurethane resins are made for safe contact with food and drink. Only certain products are tested and certified as food safe, which means they have been evaluated to ensure they don’t release harmful substances during use. Before using any resin for items like trays, coasters, serving boards, or table tops intended to touch food, carefully review the manufacturer’s specifications, labels, and any available certification documentation.
Most general-purpose art or casting resins, such as Art Pro, do not state food safety approval, so they are best used for decorative items or surfaces that won’t come into direct contact with edible items.
Practical Guidance for Selecting a Resin
If you are planning projects like cheese boards or serving platters, only choose resins specifically marked as food contact compliant. For example, although products like “Trasparente” Multipurpose Clear Epoxy are certified non-toxic and solvent-free, this does not necessarily mean they are safe for direct food contact—food safety certification is a separate, more stringent process.
- Look for clear statements regarding food safety on the product page or packaging.
- If in doubt, consult the supplier directly or consider using a food-safe topcoat over the cured resin.
- Do not use resin coatings for surfaces that will be regularly cut upon or come into prolonged contact with hot foods, unless specifically approved for such use.
When Food Safety Certification Matters
Food-contact status becomes vital for objects like plates, cups, or utensils, and for any surface where food will rest directly for extended periods. For decoration or limited contact (such as under glassware), a standard art resin may be adequate. If total certainty is required, always err on the side of caution and insist upon certification.
