Should I Use a Release Agent When Casting Plaster into Silicone Rubber?

When working with plaster and silicone rubber moulds, achieving a clean, undamaged cast is key. Knowing whether to use a release agent can make the demoulding process much smoother.

Why Use a Release Agent?

Although silicone rubber is naturally non-stick, using a release agent when casting plaster can be highly beneficial—especially with new or highly detailed moulds. A light application forms a fine barrier, reducing the risk of plaster bonding to the silicone and helping to preserve intricate details.

Choosing and Applying a Release Agent

Select a release agent that is suitable for use with both plaster and silicone rubber. Dedicated release sprays or diluted liquid soap solutions are common choices. To apply, ensure your mould is clean, then lightly mist or brush the agent over all contact surfaces, taking care not to obscure fine mould details. Let the release agent dry (if required) before pouring the plaster mix.

When Is a Release Agent Most Important?

  • First-time use: New silicone moulds can be more susceptible to sticking, making a release agent especially valuable.
  • Complex or delicate shapes: Intricate details and deep undercuts may benefit from extra slip during demoulding to avoid damage or breakage.
  • Repeated use: While silicone generally resists plaster adhesion, using a release agent can help prolong the life of both the mould and the castings over multiple uses.
