How Do I Prevent Bubbles When Embedding Insects?

Creating resin insect art is highly rewarding, but air bubbles can spoil the clear look you’re aiming for. By preparing both your subject and your resin carefully, you can minimise bubbles and achieve a professional, glass-like finish.

Prepare Your Insects and Workspace

Before you start, ensure that the insects are completely dry. Any moisture can produce bubbles or interfere with resin curing. Dry specimens in a warm, dry space for several days. Consider placing them in a well-ventilated container with a desiccant for best results. Make sure your workspace is dust-free and at a stable temperature, as sudden changes can contribute to bubble formation.

Layering and Pouring Techniques

To help avoid bubbles, pour your resin in thin layers rather than all at once. Start with a small base layer; once this becomes tacky, position your insect using tweezers. Slowly pour additional resin to submerge the specimen, letting each layer level out for a moment. Pouring slowly reduces the chance of trapping air around delicate features.

For high-clarity results, choose a clear casting resin like the “Trasparente” Multipurpose Clear Epoxy Resin, which is designed for transparent embedding and has good bubble release qualities up to 2cm thick.

Removing Bubbles Before Curing

If you spot bubbles on the surface or around the insect, gently coax them out using a toothpick. You can also wave a heat gun or a small torch briefly over the resin to help bubbles rise and pop—always use a gentle touch to avoid overheating. Go slowly, and repeat these steps as needed before curing fully.

When Bubble Prevention Really Matters

Taking the time to prevent bubbles is especially important for pieces intended as jewellery, keepsakes, or scientific displays, where clarity showcases the insect’s features. Careful preparation results in more professional and satisfying finished work.
