← Back to How to prepare epoxy resin on a speargun?

Perfecting a speargun’s finish starts with fixing any imperfections before applying epoxy resin. Proper repairs beneath the surface ensure long-lasting protection and a flawless look.
Step 1: Identify and Clean the Damaged Area
Begin by inspecting the speargun for small chips, cracks, or dents. Clean the affected area thoroughly to remove any debris or grease. A clean base is fundamental for adhesives to bond securely and for the resin finish to adhere evenly.
Step 2: Repair with an Appropriate Epoxy Glue
For small chips or cracks, apply a strong two-component epoxy glue such as FixExpress. Mix equal parts of resin and hardener (typically 1:1 ratio) for optimal results. Work the epoxy into the damage, ensuring any voids are completely filled. Let the repair cure fully—most rapid-set epoxies harden within five minutes, but always allow extra time before further handling.
Step 3: Sand Smooth for a Seamless Finish
Once cured, sand the repaired area flat and flush with the surrounding surface. Use progressively finer grits of sandpaper as you approach the final smoothness. Any protruding or uneven repair patches will show up under the epoxy resin coating, so take time for careful sanding.
When This Matters
Properly repairing damage before resin coating improves not only the speargun’s appearance but also helps ensure the coating remains sealed against moisture—crucial for prolonged use in marine environments.
