Do I Need to Sand Surfaces Before Gluing with Resin?

Preparing your surfaces is a simple but essential part of achieving a strong, long-lasting resin joint. Sanding before gluing with resin makes a noticeable difference to the bond quality, no matter your project.

Why Sanding Helps Resin Adhesion

Sanding creates a slightly roughened surface on materials such as wood, metal, plastic, or glass. This increased texture allows the resin adhesive to grip more effectively, rather than sitting purely on a smooth and potentially slippery layer. As a result, the bond formed is mechanically stronger and less prone to delamination over time.

How to Prepare Surfaces for Gluing

  • Clean first: Remove dust, grease, or old adhesive residues. Use a lint-free cloth and a mild solvent if needed.
  • Sand lightly: Use fine-grit sandpaper (typically 120–220 grit) to roughen the area you plan to bond.
  • Wipe away dust: After sanding, brush or wipe off all dust to avoid contamination.

Once prepared, you can proceed to apply your resin adhesive, such as “Klebfix” – Two-Component Fast Epoxy Glue 2K, or use the appropriate casting resin if making a poured joint.

When This Matters Most

Proper surface sanding is especially important when bonding non-porous materials (like glass or metal) or if you need a joint with high load-bearing requirements. For decorative work or when working with intricate pieces, gentle sanding also helps ensure the resin fully adheres to the entire surface.
