Choosing the Right Resin and Preparation Tips

Selecting a low-viscosity epoxy resin is the simplest way to minimise air bubbles. Thinner resins naturally allow air to rise and escape during casting, resulting in clearer results. Warming your resin slightly (by placing bottles in a bath of warm water before mixing) can also improve flow and help bubbles dissipate more quickly, but always follow product guidance to avoid overheating.

Mix components slowly and steadily. Rapid or vigorous mixing tends to trap more air within the resin, so take your time and scrape the sides of your mixing cup. Allow the freshly mixed resin to rest for a minute before pouring to let some bubbles rise and pop.

• Select a self-levelling, low-viscosity resin such as Liquidissima for detailed applications.
• Work in a dust-free, draft-free environment to prevent reintroducing bubbles or debris.

Using Isopropyl Alcohol to Remove Surface Bubbles

Surface bubbles are common, but can be dealt with easily using a fine mist of isopropyl alcohol (IPA). After you’ve poured the resin and let it spread, gently spray 99.9% pure isopropyl alcohol across the surface from a distance. This encourages trapped air bubbles to break and vanish, resulting in a smooth finish. Avoid saturation—just a light mist is often enough.

• Ensure adequate ventilation when working with isopropyl alcohol. It is highly flammable, so keep away from open flames or heat sources.
• Only use IPA as a surface treatment—it should not be mixed directly into the resin for bubble removal.
