Preparing wood with the right sealer or primer before applying epoxy resin is essential for strong adhesion and a long-lasting finish. Using appropriate products not only protects the wood but also helps prevent unwanted reactions and surface issues.
Choosing Between Epoxy Sealers and Water-Based Primers
The two main options for treating wood prior to epoxy resin application are dedicated epoxy sealers and water-based primers. Epoxy sealers, such as EpoxyWood, are formulated to penetrate deeply into wood pores, reinforcing and waterproofing the material. This is particularly useful for older timber or wood needing structural support. Alternatively, universal water-based primers like Epoxyprimer offer excellent adhesion and are suitable for newer or less absorbent wooden surfaces, as well as a range of other substrates.

How to Apply Sealers and Primers Correctly
For best results, ensure the wood is thoroughly dry and sanded smooth before priming. When using an epoxy sealer, apply with a brush to allow for deep penetration and let it cure fully before proceeding with your epoxy resin project. For water-based primers, use a roller or brush for even coverage. Give the primer adequate curing time, typically 24–48 hours, to ensure maximum bond strength before applying your chosen epoxy resin.
When It Matters Most
- Restoring outdoor wood: Deep-penetrating epoxy sealers are especially valuable for stabilising and waterproofing weathered timber.
- High-traffic surfaces: Using a quality primer helps prevent lifting, bubbles, or peeling on areas that will be subject to frequent use.
