← Back to For tiles, is resin-based or water-based better?

Choosing a coating for tiled surfaces often comes down to durability, especially in busy or damp environments. Understanding how resin-based and water-based options perform can help you select the best protection for your tiles.
Resin-Based Coatings: Built for Strength
Resin-based tile coatings, particularly those made from epoxy or polyurethane, are known for their robust finish. These products create a tough, long-lasting barrier that can resist scratches, abrasion, moisture and heavy wear. Polyurethane systems, such as Prolux PU Coating, are especially valued for high-traffic or wet areas, offering superior protection both indoors and out. Epoxy resin systems are also highly effective where a seamless, waterproof finish is required — for example, on kitchen, bathroom or exterior tiled surfaces.

Water-Based Coatings: Where They Shine
Modern water-based coatings have advanced significantly and now offer convenience, lower odour and faster drying times. Some water-based formulas, like Epoxyprimer, use water as a carrier but still rely on an epoxy resin for the final finish, providing good adhesion but typically with less resistance to long-term heavy traffic than fully resin-based coats. These options are often selected for less demanding spaces or where indoor air quality is a top concern.
Applying and Using Durable Tile Finishes
For lasting results, surface preparation matters as much as product choice. Tiles must be clean and properly primed to avoid peeling or premature wear. Two-component systems require careful mixing and even application. Always follow the recommended curing times – often 24–48 hours – to ensure full performance. Highly durable coatings may need additional steps like priming with suitable products or applying topcoats for extra resilience and easier cleaning.

When Durability Matters Most
Choose a resin-based coating when tiles are exposed to moisture, footfall, or wear from cleaning. Entryways, bathrooms, commercial kitchens and outdoor patios are all prime candidates for these tougher finishes.
