← Back to How to make a photo frame with epoxy resin?

Creating a photo frame with epoxy resin is an engaging project, but trapped air bubbles can spoil an otherwise clear and glossy finish. Luckily, there are tried and tested techniques to keep your frame as flawless as possible.
Mixing and Pouring Techniques
The way you mix your epoxy resin greatly affects the number of bubbles. Always stir components together slowly, scraping the sides and base of your container. Vigorous mixing introduces excess air, so take your time. When it comes to pouring, let the resin flow gently into the frame mould rather than dumping it all at once—this encourages any existing bubbles to rise to the surface before they get trapped.

Eliminating Bubbles Before Curing
Even with careful preparation, some bubbles may remain. To address these, use a toothpick to pop visible bubbles on the surface. For small or persistent bubbles, lightly mist the resin surface with isopropyl alcohol before curing. This will help break the surface tension and release trapped air. Avoid using excessive heat as it can interfere with the curing process, especially for pours thicker than recommended for your resin.
Selecting the Right Resin for Clear Results
The choice of resin is crucial for a bubble-free frame. Opt for clear casting resins specifically formulated for shallow or detailed projects. For most photo frames, products like “Trasparente” Multipurpose Clear Epoxy Resin (up to 2cm depth) or “Icrystal” (up to 1.5cm) are well-suited. Both offer excellent clarity and simple mixing, helping minimise bubble formation from the start.
