← Back to How do you resin polystyrene?

Epoxy resins are often used to coat polystyrene for art, crafts, or modelmaking. Smoothing your finished piece is possible, but requires care to avoid damaging the surface or structure.
How and When to Sand Epoxy on Polystyrene
Only begin sanding your epoxy-coated polystyrene once the resin is completely cured—check the manufacturer’s guidelines for the safe curing time. Use fine-grit sandpaper, ideally 600 grit or higher, to gently address any runs or imperfections in the finish.
- Sand slowly and with minimal pressure to avoid exposing or damaging the polystyrene beneath.
- It helps to sand in small, circular motions, checking your progress frequently.

Safety Precautions
When sanding epoxy, tiny dust particles can become airborne. Always wear a dust mask or respirator and work in a well-ventilated area. Protect your hands and eyes as well, since cured epoxy dust can be an irritant.
Recommended Products for Epoxy-Coated Polystyrene
For best results, use an epoxy resin that cures clear and smooth, such as “Trasparente” Multipurpose Clear Epoxy Resin. It delivers a glossy, self-levelling surface up to 2cm in thickness, ideal for many polystyrene applications. For smaller or more detailed work, “One-2-One” and “Liquidissima” resins are also suitable picks.
