Sanding creates a slightly roughened texture on the surface of cured epoxy resin. This helps adhesives, especially epoxy glues, to grip far more securely than they could on a glossy, smooth surface. A lightly abraded area allows the glue to anchor itself, minimising the risk of joins coming apart over time.
When you skip sanding, adhesive may only adhere to the very outer layer and could peel off more easily, leading to weak or short-lived bonding.
