Do I Need to Seal Concrete Before Priming for Resin?

Preparing a concrete floor for resin coating involves careful attention to the base. One common question is whether you must seal the concrete before applying a resin primer for the best results.

Why Concrete Sealing Might Be Needed

Concrete can vary widely in how absorbent it is, especially if it’s new or particularly porous. Highly absorbent concrete may draw too much primer below the surface, reducing its ability to form a strong, continuous layer. In these cases, applying a deep-penetrating sealer before your primer can help reinforce the base, ensuring it is stable and less likely to absorb excessive primer.

Priming Without Prior Sealing

For most cured, less-absorbent concrete surfaces, you can apply a resin primer directly, such as the “Epoxyprimer” Universal Water-Based Two-Component Epoxy Floor Primer. This type of primer is designed to maximise adhesion between the concrete and the resin coating, resulting in a durable, well-bonded floor. However, always check the surface porosity first; if the substrate absorbs water rapidly, consider a sealing step before priming.

Choosing a Suitable Concrete Sealer

When sealing is required, opt for a product specifically formulated for absorbent concrete, like “Resinstone” One-Component Methacrylic Resin, which penetrates deeply and adds strength. Apply according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, ensuring full cure before proceeding with your chosen primer.

When This Matters

On new or highly porous floors, sealing supports the primer’s effectiveness and helps prevent premature failures in your resin finish.
For older or denser concrete, sealing is usually not needed if the primer is of good quality and the floor is thoroughly cleaned.
