← Back to How do you make resin moulds in modelling?

One of the most common challenges in resin modelling is getting your finished piece to demould cleanly, especially from detailed or textured surfaces. Following a few key steps can make all the difference and help your models release smoothly every time.
Using Release Agents for Smooth Demoulding
Applying a suitable release agent to your model is the simplest and most effective way to prevent resin from sticking to the mould. This is particularly important if your master model has intricate details or is made from porous materials such as wood or plaster—these surfaces are more likely to bond with the silicone, making removal difficult. Spray or brush on a release agent, ensuring a light and even coverage. Leave it to dry fully before pouring your moulding silicone.
Some high-quality silicone mould materials, like “Pure Mould” – Translucent Liquid Silicone Rubber for Mould Making, offer excellent non-stick properties, but for especially detailed work or repeat castings, a release agent still provides added peace of mind.
Preparing and Caring for Your Mould
Once the silicone has cured, carefully remove the master model from the mould. Check for any areas where the silicone may grip, such as undercuts or sharp corners. Lightly easing the edges first can help avoid tears or blemishes. After each casting, wash the mould gently with mild soap and water, and periodically reapply release agent to maintain its demoulding properties, especially when working with polyurethane or epoxy resins.
When Release Preparation Matters Most
- If your model includes deep texture, fine details, or small cavities.
- When casting with fast-setting polyurethane resins like “IWhite”.
- For preserving the lifespan of precision moulds used in repeat production.
