← Back to How do you build modern permeable outdoor paving?

Laying the mixture is a crucial stage when installing permeable outdoor paving. This process ensures both durability and effective water drainage, key benefits of pebble and resin-bound surfaces.
Preparation Before Mixing
Begin with a firm, stable base, ensuring the area is level and free of debris. Check moisture levels—excess water can affect resin curing. Have washed, dried pebbles and the appropriate resin binder ready. If working with white aggregates, select a non-yellowing polyurethane binder such as “Polirock” for clearest results, while coloured stones suit low-yellowing epoxy or polyurethane binders.
Mixing and Application
Using a clean container or a cement mixer for larger surfaces, thoroughly blend the resin with the chosen aggregates as specified by your product guidance. For most systems, like the Flowstone Complete Permeable Floor Kit, follow the product’s step-by-step instructions, ensuring each pebble is coated. Immediately after mixing, spread the mixture evenly onto the prepared sub-base to the recommended thickness, typically 20-40mm, using trowels for a consistent finish. Compact gently to avoid air gaps and to ensure water can percolate through.
When This Matters: Get the Timing Right
It’s important to lay and finish the resin-pebble mixture promptly after mixing, as the binder will begin to set. Choose a dry day with moderate temperatures, avoiding periods of rain or high humidity to achieve a reliable, long-lasting surface.
