What Ratio Should I Use for Silicone Putty?

Getting the mixing ratio right for silicone putty is key to crafting durable, detailed moulds. A balanced mixture ensures proper setting and long-lasting results for your projects.

The Recommended Mixing Ratio

For most two-component silicone putties, such as “I–Gum” – Non-Toxic Silicone Putty for Mould Making, the standard ratio is 1:1 by volume or weight. This means equal parts of each component are combined until the colour and texture are uniform. Mixing in this simple ratio helps guarantee consistent curing and an even, flexible mould every time.

How to Mix and Apply Silicone Putty

Start by measuring the same amount of each putty component. Knead them together thoroughly with your hands until the mixture is homogeneous, usually in under a minute. Thanks to its non-toxic formulation, “I–Gum” can be handled without gloves and has a relatively long working time, so you won’t have to rush. Once mixed, press the putty around your item or into your chosen mould form, shaping it as needed before it begins to set.

  • Mix equal parts of both putty components.
  • Work the mixture until you achieve a consistent colour.
  • Apply immediately, as curing will begin once combined.

When This Matters

Sticking to the 1:1 ratio especially matters when you need reliable results for resin casting, detailed hobby crafts, or small production runs. An uneven ratio can lead to soft spots or incomplete curing, risking damage to both your mould and casted items.
