← Back to How to make a photo frame with epoxy resin?

If your epoxy photo frame remains tacky or soft after curing, it can be disappointing—but this is a common problem in resin crafts. Luckily, with a few tips, you can both fix and prevent this issue.
Why Resin Frames Stay Sticky or Soft
A sticky finish is most often caused by an unsuitable resin mix. This happens if the resin and hardener aren’t measured precisely or mixed thoroughly. Inaccurate ratios—even slight miscalculations—can prevent the resin from properly reacting and curing. Similarly, insufficient mixing strands parts of the resin mixture, leaving uncured areas on your frame. Occasionally, working in cold or damp conditions can slow the curing process, so always check the manufacturer’s recommendations for temperature.

How to Fix a Sticky Photo Frame
- Allow more time: Sometimes tackiness is simply due to needing a longer cure. Leave your frame in a dust-free, warm spot and check again after 24–48 hours.
- Recoating: If waiting doesn’t work, you can apply a fresh resin layer. Make sure any surface contaminants or tacky resin are removed or gently abraded before pouring a new coat. Choose a reliable resin—like “Trasparente” clear epoxy resin—and measure carefully using digital scales or the correct volume method. Mix slowly and scrape the container sides for at least 2–3 minutes.
- Avoid heat guns for curing: While heat guns remove bubbles, using them to force curing can worsen stickiness if the resin overheats.
Preventing Sticky Results on Future Frames
- Follow exact ratios and timings: Use a resin suitable for your chosen thickness—products such as “Icrystal” (for up to 1.5cm) and “One-2-One” (easy 1:1 mixing) are straightforward for beginners.
- Mix thoroughly: Ensure your resin appears completely uniform—cloudy streaks signal under-mixing and should be avoided.
- Check your workspace: Work at the recommended temperature, and avoid moisture in the mould.

When This Matters Most
Ensuring a smooth, hard finish is especially important if your resin frame will be handled often or needs to protect sentimental items like photographs and artwork. Paying extra attention to measurements and mixing prevents sticky mishaps.
