Select Compatible Resins and Pour Thoughtfully

Getting clear results and long-lasting moulds starts with selecting the right resin for your silicone mould and pouring with care. Here’s a practical guide to making the best choices for your casting project.

How to Choose a Compatible Resin

Not every resin suits every mould, so it’s important to read both your resin and silicone specs. Most platinum-based silicone moulds, like the Pure Mould Translucent Liquid Silicone Rubber, are suitable for epoxy, polyester, polyurethane, and acrylic resins. When working with deeper pours—anything over 2cm—choose a resin specifically formulated for thick casting. For example, EpoxyTable 5-Five can be used for resin pours up to 5cm. Always ensure the resin and mould are designed to work together to prevent unexpected reactions or finishing issues.

Pour Resin with Attention to Detail

How you pour is just as important as the resin you select. Slowly pour your mixed resin into the lowest part of your mould to minimise bubbles and help the resin flow naturally, capturing details more effectively. Use a low-viscosity resin for intricate moulds with fine features. For large pours, working in layers can prevent overheating and distortion—this is especially relevant for projects exceeding 5cm in depth or involving high resin volumes.

When This Matters Most

Selecting compatible resins and pouring thoughtfully is crucial for jewellery, artistic projects, moulds with delicate texturing, or large castings like tabletops. Proper technique ensures crisp detail, reduces the risk of bubbles or unfinished areas, and extends the usable life of your silicone mould.
