Not every material is suitable as a base for epoxy resin projects. The choice of substrate will influence how easily your work can be removed and how successful your casting turns out. Here’s how to select a compatible surface for your resin work.
Choosing Suitable Substrates
When working with epoxy resin, it’s important to avoid surfaces that will bond permanently with the resin unless that’s your intention. Commonly used bases include sealed wooden boards, melamine, HDPE plastic, and special silicone mats. These materials either prevent strong adhesion or are designed for easy project removal once cured.
- Melamine and HDPE sheets: Favoured for resin tables and panels, as cured resin does not stick strongly and removal is straightforward.
- Silicone rubber: Excellent for mould making, as it offers reliable release, especially for detailed or complex shapes.
- Sealed or waxed wood: Suitable for supporting resin layers, but only when treated to keep the resin from soaking in or causing damage.

Preparation and Release Techniques
To ensure your resin project can be detached easily, preparation is key. Surfaces should be clean, free from oils and dust, and covered with a release agent or film if necessary. Some resin kits, such as the River-Table Complete Kit, include release films and silicone sealants which assist in both sealing the formwork and making removal easier. Always follow kit or product instructions closely for best results.
When This Matters Most
Using the right base material is essential when you plan to remove your finished resin piece or need a clean, sharp edge. If a substrate is too porous or bonds too well, you risk losing your project or damaging both resin and base. Substrate choice particularly matters for resin art, intricate moulds, and table construction.
