← Back to How do you apply resin to floors?

Choosing the right substrate is essential for a long-lasting and visually appealing resin floor. The quality and stability of the base layer greatly affect both the final appearance and durability of your resin installation.
Ideal Substrates for Resin Floors
Resin floors perform best when applied over substrates that are strong, stable, and dry. Suitable options include:
- Concrete: Offers excellent strength and is widely preferred for both indoor and outdoor installations.
- Screed: Provides a flat and even surface, ideal for resin’s self-levelling properties.
- Secure, fixed tiles: Properly bonded tiles can make a reliable base if well-prepared.
Avoid applying resin to surfaces that are loose, damp, or flexible, as these can compromise the longevity and finish of your flooring.
Preparing Your Substrate
Before starting your resin floor project, ensure the substrate is clean, dust-free, and moisture-free. It may be necessary to repair cracks, holes, or uneven patches before priming. An appropriate primer, such as “Epoxyprimer”, is recommended to boost adhesion and help seal porous surfaces. Allow primers to fully cure—typically between 24 to 48 hours—before applying any resin layer.
When Substrate Choice Matters
Substrate quality is particularly crucial in high-traffic or outdoor areas, such as driveways, patios, or garages, where movement and weather can impact performance. Selecting the correct substrate and preparing it thoroughly minimises the risk of cracking or delamination, and ensures your resin floor remains attractive and durable over time.
