Avoid Overuse of Resin to Prevent Yellowing

When installing a resin-based floor, getting the resin dosage right is crucial—not just for stability, but also for avoiding unsightly yellowing over time. Let’s look at best practices so your surface stays bright and clean.

Why Overapplying Resin Can Cause Yellowing

Using more resin than needed doesn’t strengthen your floor. In fact, overapplication can create thick layers that trap air and react poorly to sunlight or general wear, especially with standard epoxies. This excess can lead to a yellowish tint, which is particularly noticeable on light or white stones.

Achieving the Right Resin-to-Stone Ratio

For most permeable or decorative pebble floors, a common guideline is to use around 3% resin by weight relative to your aggregate. As an example, if you have 25kg of coloured stones, you’d use about 750g of resin. White or marble aggregates benefit from specially formulated polyurethane binders which are less likely to yellow. Always thoroughly mix resin with your stones before laying, never pour resin directly onto loose aggregate.

When This Matters: Choosing the Correct Binder

  • For coloured or dark stones, opt for a low-yellowing or clear epoxy binder like “Trasparente”.
  • White or very light stones should be paired with a non-yellowing polyurethane binder such as “Polirock”.
  • Careful calculation and even mixing prevent resin pooling—minimising the risk of yellowing over time.
