Silicone putty is a popular choice for quick and simple mould-making, but it’s important to know its strengths and its limits—especially when working with detailed or intricate shapes.
When Silicone Putty Works Best
Silicone putty, like “I–Gum” Non-Toxic Silicone Putty, is ideal for moulding small or uncomplicated items. Its putty-like texture makes it easy to handle and shape directly onto your object; no special tools or pouring is needed. Putty materials are great for quick prototypes, coasters, keychains, or small crafts where the level of detail is moderate to low.

Limitations for Fine Details
While convenient, silicone putty may struggle to capture deep or highly intricate features and fine surface textures. If absolute accuracy or very fine textures are important, a liquid silicone rubber will generally be a better choice. Decide on your silicone based on project complexity. For simple or medium-detail items, silicone putty offers speed and ease. For detailed reproduction, consider a liquid formulation like the “Pure Mould” Translucent Liquid Silicone Rubber, which excels with resin, plaster, or wax. Always press the putty in firmly around your item to reduce air pockets, and follow recommended mixing ratios for the best results.
When This Matters
If you are making jewellery masters, figurines, or ornate decorations, using a liquid silicone rubber instead of a putty can make a noticeable difference in the quality and accuracy of your moulds.
