How Can I Avoid Air Bubbles in My Silicone Mould?

Air bubbles are a common frustration in silicone mould making for resin castings, but a careful approach and the right tools can help you achieve smooth, professional results.

Pour with Care to Reduce Trapped Air

When pouring silicone into your mould box, aim for a slow, controlled pour in a thin stream from a height. This allows the silicone to stretch as it falls, helping bubbles to escape naturally before the material settles around your model. After pouring, gently tap the sides of the mould box to release hidden bubbles to the surface before the silicone cures.

Consider Specialist Techniques and Materials

For highly detailed or complex moulds, you may wish to use a vacuum chamber to draw bubbles out of mixed silicone before pouring. If using a pourable product like “Pure Mould” translucent liquid silicone rubber, its good fluidity aids bubble release, especially in intricate textures. With putty-style silicones, mixing thoroughly and pressing the material firmly around the master helps minimise air entrapment.

When This Matters Most

  • Bubble-free moulds are especially important when reproducing fine details, text, or delicate patterns, as trapped air can spoil the finished cast.
  • Projects using clear or translucent resins will highlight any imperfections within the mould, so extra care at this stage is worthwhile.
