How do I minimise air bubbles in my resin statues?

Annoying air bubbles are a common setback when casting resin statues, especially when you’re aiming for crisp detail. With a few easy adjustments to your process and toolkit, you can achieve clearer and more impressive results.

Adopt the Right Pouring Technique

Poor pouring practices are a leading cause of trapped bubbles. Slowly pour the mixed resin in a thin, continuous stream into one corner of the mould rather than straight into the middle. This allows the resin to naturally displace air as it flows, reducing pockets of bubbles. Once poured, gently tap or flex the mould to encourage trapped air to rise to the surface and escape. For intricate or deep moulds, tilting the mould slightly or using a thin stick to coax out stubborn bubbles can improve results.

Choose Highly Fluid and Suitable Resins

The type of resin you use makes a noticeable difference. High fluidity casting resins, like the “IWhite” Polyurethane Casting Resin, are easier to pour and more likely to fill fine details while readily releasing air. Fast-curing two-part systems also help, as there is less time for bubbles to remain suspended in the mixture. Always mix components thoroughly but gently to minimise introducing air at the start.

When Advanced Methods Matter Most

If you’re striving for professional-quality statues or working with highly detailed or larger moulds, consider specialist tools. Vacuum chambers are designed to degas the resin before pouring, removing virtually all trapped air. For some projects, applying light vibration to the filled mould – for example, by placing it on a vibrating surface – can further assist in bubble release. While not always essential for every piece, these steps are invaluable for statement projects where clarity and detail matter most.
