Deep Casting Resin: Key Differences
Not all epoxy resins are suitable for thick pours. Regular resins may overheat or crack when used in layers above 1–2 cm. Dedicated deep-pour resins, however, are formulated with low exothermic reactions to allow single casts of several centimetres. For example, EpoxyTable 5-Five is ideal for pours up to 5 cm, while Epoxytable 10-Ten handles depths up to 10 cm, making them the preferred choices for river tables and significant artistic castings.
Practical Tips for Thick Resin Castings
- Always follow manufacturer guidance on maximum single pour depths.
- For very large projects (side over 100 cm or weight over 8 kg), cast in multiple layers, waiting 6–8 hours between pours, to reduce risk of heat build-up.
- Allow plenty of working time and ensure your workspace is at a stable temperature for best results.
- Choose resins with low viscosity to help bubbles escape during curing and look for strong UV protection to prevent yellowing over the years.
